Round 8: Langwarrin v Bulleen Lions – 29 May, 2010
It was Langwarrin vs. Bullen Lions for the round eight match at Lawton Park on Saturday the 29th of May. Langy managed to add another 3 goals to add to the 3 goals Bullen had conceded all season, taking the victory at 3:2.
Jonesy returned after a short break due to a knee injury to take up his position in goals. Junior, Caff, Carl and Danny made up the backline while Boris, Simon, Driver and Ray filled out the middle. Up-front were Matty and Caleb.
It was a slow start to the game with both teams, one after the other, being awarded a free kick due to handballs. It didn’t take long for things to fire up though. In the early minutes of the game Driver tested the keeper’s dexterity by taking control of a loose ball just outside the box and sending it straight towards the top right hand corner of the goal. The keeper was on his toes and deflected it out in a nick of time. Bulleen were quick to respond and didn’t take long to bring it into their attacking half. Waiting to take care of them on the left were Caff and Junior working brilliantly together. Caff intercepting short passes and deflecting the ball, Junior pouncing on the strikers, putting in brilliant tackles and clearing the ball up the line.
They’re not the number one team for nothing though and did take the boys off guard at times. A string of passes brought no.9 for Bulleen in front of the goal. On his own, Jonesy came out to meet it and the goal became an open target. A miskick sent the ball out for a goal kick. Half an hour in, Boris won the ball in the centre of the park and flicked it onto Caleb. Caleb passed back to Boris who placed a through-ball to Matty, up-front. Matty received the ball just outside the box in the centre, took on the keeper, brought it to the right edge of the box and put it away in the left corner for a 1:0 lead in the 31st minute. A pass from Danny to Carl two minutes later was poorly judged. It rolled slowly between them both, an easy target for a Bulleen striker who saw his opportunity and wasted no time in pouncing on it. Jonesy ran out to meet it but the striker calmly put it past him and into the goal for the equaliser.
Just before the end of the half, Caff sent a long ball up the park and it was received by a Bulleen defender. He attempted to header it back to the keeper but it was badly executed and Matty was positioned well to intercept the pass, take control and put it away for a 2:1 lead in the 40th minute.
A Bulleen free kick shook things up in the 43rd minute. Taken from just outside the box, the shot on goal was low and powerful. Jonesy got down to capture the ball but it rebounded off his chest and out for a corner. Jonesy was all over the subsequent corner kick though, and plucked the ball out of the air before it could do any damage. It was the 45th minute and it was almost time for the half to come to an end. However, Langwarrin won a corner and managed to squeeze one last goal in. A short corner by Boris to Simon who delivered perfectly into the box, a Bulleen defender panicked and produced a handball, which became a penalty for Langwarrin. Caleb took it and confidently put it away to strengthen the lead at 3:1.
It didn’t take long for things to get interesting in the second half. Bullen won a free kick just outside the box. Taken and slammed powerfully towards the wall, it caught everyone off guard when it deflected and changed direction. Jonesy was already jumping to the right but the ball flew left and it became 3:2 in the 55th minute. Bulleen may have been somewhat shaken by the 3 goals conceded, but they still played in an ordered fashion and put up a good fight. Langwarrin, fearing the worst after last years 3-goal-comeback by Bullen, put up an equally tough front, and these factors combined meant it really was anyone’s game.
A long ball placed by a Bulleen defender from deep in the park was received by a midfielder in their attacking half a short while later. Carl worked to chase it out of play. The resulting throw-in landed right in the centre of the box and the boys scrambled to re-gain control. A striker managed to take a shot but it was just wide. They were back again seconds later but Danny put in a tackle to stop them in their tracks. It was Driver in the 75th minute with a free kick just off the centre line. It found Caleb right in the middle of the box who controlled it, then spun around and took a shot. It was a powerful strike but sailed over the goals.
Matty enjoyed a huge amount of possession and in one such moment found himself with the ball and a defender to take on. The defender was no problem and easily outsmarted. He took the ball out to the right and attempted to slot it into the left. The keeper threw his whole body onto it and stopped the ball in its tracks just in time.
Minutes later he received another ball in the attacking half. He attempted to take the ball up again but the defender was successful in stopping him. He turned and flicked it onto Driver instead, who had sprinted up the left wing to provide an option. Driver placed a shot that sent the keeper flying, yet again, but could not get a score on the board. A late free kick for Bulleen was efficiently taken care of and passed out to Caleb who sent it on to Ray. Ray speedily took the ball up and crossed it in to win a corner. They made it a short one and Ray held it up until the time was right for a shot. It flew towards the goal but was caught by the keeper.
Both teams fought hard and produced many goal scoring opportunities but when the whistle blew shortly after, the score remained 3:2 for Langwarrin. A great win boys, 3 points well deserved!
