Round 7: Springvale White Eagles v Langwarrin – 24 May, 2010

Monday the 24th of May brought the first night match of the season for Langwarrin. Played against the Springvale White Eagles on their home ground in crisp, cool conditions, the boys were outclassed at times but also experienced some bad luck to concede the match 4 goals to 1.

In the backline were Carl, Ray and Quinny, who was welcomed back after a long break due to injury. Buzza, Danny, Boris, Driver and Simon took care of the middle and Caleb and Matty were upfront. Seany was in goals and Caff, Junior, Jonesy and Alex on bench. Mladen, Ben, Reha and Kris were all looking on from the sideline with various injuries.

The boys began the match well, working beautifully together to move the ball around. Caleb got his foot to a loose ball in the middle of the park early on and passed to Matty who was waiting just outside the box directly in line with the goal. He controlled the ball and took a low, powerful shot right on target. The White Eagles keeper looked shaky, but he managed to flick it out of the danger zone.

A lovely build-up of play in the 20th minute began with Ray, who passed it on to Simon. Simon found Matty and Matty crossed it into Caleb, who took a diving header but just missed allowing a defender to clear the ball out.

White Eagles also had their share of chances early on and were swift and merciless with their attacks. They made their way into the box with one such attack but Boris got a foot to the ball, sending it out for a corner, which Seany cleared out of the box.

A free kick to Langwarrin in the 35th minute allowed the boys to utilise their latest free kick trick on an unsuspecting side. Caleb took it and tapped it to the side instead of blasting it toward the goal. Buzza received the ball on the right hand side of the goal and crossed it in. It was perfectly positioned but there was no-one there to finish it off and the White Eagles defenders were all over it.

In the 40th minute Simon received the ball in the middle of the park and passed it out wide to Caleb who then passed it back to Simon. Simon took it into the box but was taken down and won a free kick. Taken by Buzza on the left hand side of the box, the ball curved its way around everyone, including the keeper and straight into the goal for a 1:0 lead.

The lead, however, was short-lived and things were back to square one in the 46th minute when a White Eagles throw-in placed the ball right in the centre of the box. Rados took control and calmly dribbled around Langwarrin's defenders putting the ball away to level the score out at 1:1.

The second half brought both sides a clean slate but it seemed that Langwarrin simply weren't as hungry or aggressive as their Balkan counterparts. The boys often gave their opposition a generous amount of space with which to play. That together with a few missed chances proved costly.

White Eagles, on the other hand, attacked ruthlessly from the beginning to the end of the half and in the 51st minute a striker dribbled the ball up to the left hand side of the box. Seany had the front post covered but the back post was left exposed and that's exactly where the shot was placed for a 2:1 lead.

Soon after, Driver was taken down in the middle of the park and won a free kick. Taken by Carl, it was passed out right to Buzza, who sent it straight back to Carl. He switched sides and sent it to Ray on the left who lobbed it up, over and into the box right to Buzza waiting in front of the goal. Buzza brought it down and controlled it beautifully. He looked up and took a shot but the keeper was well-positioned and scooped it up before it could do any damage.

A mere 14 minutes later White Eagles strengthened their lead. It began with a ball from the middle of the park to a striker waiting on the right edge of the box. The majority of the White Eagles players possessed a great amount of speed and agility and this striker was no exception. He dribbled the ball past Quinny and put it away for a 3:1 lead in the 65th minute. The White Eagles attacks remained relentless while Langwarrin's intensity faded. They scrambled to keep things together in the defence with Quinny sliding and falling to collect the ball from their feet and Seany flicking shots out at the last second.

Caleb and Matty enjoyed some possession up front and although the rain that started to fall midway through the half made the ball hard to control, they still managed to shake things up a little. A pass to Matty allowed him to take a shot which rebounded off a defender back to Caleb. Caleb took control but had his back facing the goals. He spun quickly, simultaneously taking a shot which soared above the heads of the defenders and keeper and found the top bar. Frustratingly, it rebounded harmlessly back out to a White Eagle's defender.

The boys tried again in the 90th minute when Carl placed a beautiful cross to Matty who took a shot right on target. It caught the keeper off guard and seemed like it was going to make it through, but a White Eagles defender was waiting and cleared the ball off the line at the last second. It wasn't over though. A long ball in the 95th minute found a White Eagles midfielder on the left. He took Danny on and crossed it in to a striker on the right, who put it away for a 4:1 lead.

The whistle blew and that's how the score remained. Langwarrin had their chances but their near misses proved costly. For every goal they missed, the White Eagles put one away and at the end of the match they were the ones that walked away with the victory and 3 points.
