Round 5: Pascoe Vale v Langwarrin – 8 May, 2010

It was a beautiful day – sunny and clear for the Saturday match at Pascoe Vale's home ground where Langwarrin took home the victory.

Carl, Ray and Danny played across the back with Seany in goals. Buzza, Boris, Driver, Simon and Joe were in the middle of the park with Caff and Matty up-front. On bench were: Kristian, Reha and Junior. Caleb, Quinny and Mladen were all out with injuries.

From the moment the whistle blew the game was action packed. Pascoe Vale were in fine form – quick and organised. In the first 5 minutes a Pascoe Vale striker placed a shot which rebounded off the post. However, Langwarrin's relief was short-lived as another Pascoe Vale player took control of the ball and crossed it into a striker waiting on the left. He placed a header straight into the goal and produced an early 1:0 lead.

The home team continued playing beautifully, defending well and mounting attacks from deep in the park. They were clearly the dominant side.

In the 15th minute the Pascoe Vale keeper saved the ball. However as he kicked it out the ball rebounded straight off the back of a strategically positioned Caff. The ball was rolling around in front of an open goal where a waiting Matty took control and put it away to level the score out at 1:1.

Langwarrin's attack began to look lively and produced some lovely plays. Caff worked well up-front with Boris and Matty to pass the ball around. Langy's defence looked slightly unorganised with the boys often scrambling around madly to clear the ball out of the half. However, they kept it together and did not concede any additional goals.

Minutes shy of half-time Langwarrin won a free kick just off the halfway line on the right hand side of the pitch. It was taken by Driver and kicked long – right on goal. The keeper jumped and caught it, but when he landed, he was over the line and so was the ball. Langwarrin 2, Pascoe Vale, 1.

Both sides fired up after the 3rd goal and attacked aggressively. Pascoe Vale won a free kick on the left hand side of the pitch and placed the ball right in the centre of the box. The boys defended desperately and Carl took down a Pascoe Vale striker. The referee denied the home team a penalty to the dismay of their supporters.

He evened the misfortunes out in the next minute when Simon was taken down in a similar position and also denied a penalty. At the end of the first half, Langy had the lead at 2:1.

Minutes into the second half a Pascoe Vale striker handballed the ball into the goal and was awarded a yellow card for his efforts. It was his second for the game and so he was sent off.

A short while later, a Pascoe Vale midfielder went down in the centre of the park. He lashed out at Caff and the ref saw everything. He presented the midfielder with a red card and all of a sudden it was 11 vs. 9 men.

The home team struggled to contain their anger at the ref's decisions. Soon, they were down to 8 players when a midfielder hit Caff in the face on the right wing. Initially given a yellow card, it was upgraded to a red when he argued back.

Instead of Pascoe Vale losing all hope, their hunger for the win appeared to increase and they continued to play the ball around beautifully. Regardless of their obvious disadvantage, they continuously got the ball through the defence and managed to place numerous shots on goal.

Langwarrin on the other hand, appeared to struggle with their momentum, having bouts of clean ordered play one minute then scrambling around the next. However, they managed to keep it together enough to get the job done.

Simon was taken down in the 72nd minute and awarded a free kick. Taken by Buzza, it was passed to Simon who crossed it to Carl. Carl controlled it beautifully, shook off a couple of defenders and played it back across the goal. A Pascoe Vale defender managed to stop the ball in its tracks, but it became a sitting target for Matty, who, with one neat strike, put it away for a 3:1 lead.

It was Simon again in the 89th minute working together with Kristian who came on for Driver in the 85th minute. Together, they brought the ball up on the left. Simon placed a cross into the box. Matty was positioned perfectly on the right where he received it and put it away for a 4:1 lead.

When the whistle blew, it signalled the end of a highly entertaining, action packed and emotionally charged match. The home team were obviously bitterly disappointed but Langwarrin walked off the pitch with a 4:1 victory and more importantly, 3 points.
