Round 14: Clifton Hill FC v Langwarrin – 17 July, 2010
Langwarrin has succumbed to another embarrassing defeat with a 4-0 loss away to Clifton Hill on the weekend. Again it was a poor second half that did all the damage as the home side took Langy apart time and time again.
Looking to bury the memory of last weeks display versus Fawkner, Gus rolled out with Jonesy in goal; Caff, Quinny and Joe in defence; Mur, Black, Driver, Vinnie and Boris in the middle; Karl and Matty up front.
The game began at a slow pace as both sides tried to find their feet early on. Langy particularly struggled to get their passing game going which allowed Clifton Hill to go forward, though Caff and the boys down back dealt with the early pressure. A good move up front created the first chance for Langy. Mur played it into Matty who laid off for Boris 'the bullet dodger' to have a strike from a tight angle, though he could only find the side netting.
Unfortunately that was to be Boris last contribution as he did his hamstring and was subbed for Langys son Sodda.
The boys continued to go in search of the lead as Matty received and turned in the box, though his shot was well saved by the keeper. But it was Clifton Hill that broke the deadlock on 15 minutes after some slack defending left one of their strikers with too much space. A long ball from defence was nodded onto his run, taking one touch to go past Caff and another to slot home past Jonesy. 1-0 to the home side.
Langy almost equalised in spectacular fashion as the Mauritian Magician Chris Driver saw the keeper off his line and attempted an audacious volley from the half way line which only just sailed wide with the keeper beaten. Vinnie was next to try his luck from distance, knocking it past his opponent and having a crack with his left, but the shot went high. So a decent period of play by Langy towards the end of the half, though it wasn’t enough as Clifton Hill went in 1-0 up at the break.
Into the second half things started to go down hill early for Langwarrin as they pushed forward but could not create anything up front. Clifton Hill won a free kick just outside the box on a counter attack and again some poor marking left the door open for them to double their lead. The ball was played to the back post where one of them was waiting to tap in from 6 yards.
Clifton Hill’s third goal started from the right wing where their striker got to the by line and cut back for his teammate at the far post whose first effort was saved by Jonesy, though the ball fell back to his feet and he made no mistake the second time around. And the rout was complete when Reha, who had just come on for Karl, slipped as he tried to clear the ball, leaving their striker to finish easily past Jonesy for his team’s fourth.
It was a training drill from then on out as the home side played the ball around comfortably and keep possession for long periods towards the end. When Langy did win possession, their attacks came to nothing, meaning at the final whistle the score was Clifton Hill 4, Langwarrin 0.
So it was another sorry day for the faithful who would be hoping that things turn around quickly with the Whittlesea Zebras coming to Lawton Park this Saturday at 3pm. U21’s kickoff at 1pm
