Round 13: Langwarrin v Fawkner Blues – 10 July, 2010
The Langwarrin Seniors have undone some of their great work this year with a nightmare of a match against Fawkner which saw them go down 5-0 losers in front of the Langy faithful. A rampant second half by Dolevski and Saglam was all it took for the Blues to snatch the three points in emphatic fashion.
Langy started with Chris Jones in goals. Caff, Quinny, Black and Donaghy in defence. Mur, Cochrane, Driver, Harris in the middle. Up front Langy started with Durand and Botemps.
Langy started the game heading into the wind and were able to deal with most of the attacks from Fawkner who were not able to use the wind to their advantage. Langy were able to play the ball out from the back on a number of occasions but in the final 3rd were not able to create a clear chance.
The first 45 passed without much incident and all indications pointed to a tight battle between two of the top teams in State 1. Fawkner had the only real chance of the first half when Quinny gave away possession to a Fawkner midfielder who blasted just wide from 30 yards.
Driver left his marker for dead with a quality turn before whipping in a cross that was heading for Matty Durand before the Fawkner keeper got a punch on it.Just before the break Jonesy mopped up a deflected shot and the boys went in for a breather and a chat after the ref blew for half time. It looked promising for Langy as it seemed to be a match where one goal could decide the winner. Yet not even a panel full of SBS "experts" could have predicted what was to come.
So they second half started with Langy playing with the wind, however Langy did not get off to a good start after Jonesy dropped an innocuous cross to the feet of Saglam who finished from close range to break the deadlock. Dolevski got the second when a ball was crossed to a Fawkner play who cut back for the striker to place his shot past Jonesy and into the bottom corner. Two goals in the first 10 minutes hit Langy hard. Langy tried to respond with a quality move through the middle of the park. Joe Harris played it to Driver, Driver to Matty Durand who laid it off for Vinnie to take it past a defender and lash his shot at the keeper who pushed it out for a corner.
Langy were made to rue the missed opportunity just minutes later. Saglam played it over the defence for Dolevski and Quinny to run onto, the Fawkner striker out muscling the Langy defender before rounding Jonesy and smashing it into the top of the net. Saglam made it 4 when he received down the left and beat Jonesy at his near post with a left foot effort.
And the disaster was completed when Dolevski had time to control a cut back, pick his spot and volley it in for his third and Fawner’s fifth. Congratulations to the Blues who put on an absolute master class in the second half. For Langy there’s one week to turn it all around before the trip to Clifton Hill on Saturday.
