Round 12: Western Suburbs v Langwarrin – 4 July, 2010
Game one of the second half of the season was played out against Western Suburbs on their home ground on a cold Sunday. Neither team could out-play the other producing a stale-mate and a goal-less game at 0:0.
Langwarrin had their opportunities and looked like scoring on numerous occasions but just couldn’t seem to break through. Jo set up two through-balls in the early minutes of the game. The first one went to Carl who was denied a goal by the keeper – plucking it from his feet at the last second. The second one was delivered to Matty who managed a shot but it went over.
The Suburbs mounted an impressive attack in the 15th minute and won a corner for their efforts. It was taken and cleared out by Vinnie but a Suburbs midfielder won possession and blasted a long, hard, shot towards the bottom right hand corner of the goal. Jonesy was prepared and dived down low to stop the ball in its tracks.
Jonesy was called upon again when the Suburbs made it back into the box. He ran out to meet a shot taken by a striker and deflected the ball, but it travelled dangerously across the goal. Caff was positioned on the line, though and played it safely out to Simon. Simon turned and outmanoeuvred a Suburbs defender to take the ball all the way up the line and into Langwarrin’s half. Unfortunately, he lost possession and the ball came straight back. The Suburbs took a shot but it went over.
Suburbs won the first free-kick of the match soon after. Taken from just outside the box, it was placed across the goals and found the head of a striker on the left. He sent the ball flying – but like most of their shots during the match, it went over and out for a goal-kick.
It was Langwarrin next with Driver winning the ball in the centre of the park and delivering a short, quick pass to Simon. Simon lobbed it up to Matty. It was just Matty and the keeper both sprinting towards the ball. Unfortunately the keeper made it there first and managed to steal the ball from Matty’s feet.
Caff went down just before the end of the half and the ref denied Langwarrin a free kick. Minutes earlier he gave Caff a yellow card and a free kick to the Suburbs for a similar offence. Soon after, he awarded Quinny a yellow card for a tackle that looked much less aggressive than the previous two.
Some swift goal-keeping was required once more before the end of the half when a Suburbs striker took a powerful and well-placed shot on goal. It was headed for the top right hand corner but Jonesy jumped up and flicked it out beautifully.
The second half was much the same as the first – equal possession and opportunities for both sides. Langwarrin enjoyed a solid few minutes of possession in their half, early on, passing the ball around skilfully. This culminated with a low long shot by Matty but the keeper blocked it.
A subsequent clearance by Jonesy found Matty. Matty employed two small, sharp touches to move the ball around two defenders. His hard work still didn’t allow him a clear passage to the goals so he passed out right to an oncoming Carl. Before Carl could take a shot on goal though, it was slide-tackled from underneath his feet.
Jo and Danny employed some speedy passing on the right wing to bring the ball up into Langwarrin’s half. Once in the box, Jo slipped a short pass out to the side for Danny who had run up next to him and Danny then whipped in a cross. Unfortunately the ball was too long.
It was all about Jo again minutes later when he utilised his speed and agility to take on almost half a team of Suburb’s players to bring the ball up the length of the park. He won a throw-in for his efforts. It came straight back but Junior was ready. He played the ball up to Matty who passed quickly back to Jo. Jo slammed a powerful shot towards goal but it was deflected by a Suburbs defender.
Vinnie was the next Langy player to be awarded a yellow card by the referee. A free kick was awarded to the Suburbs but they could make nothing of it.
Five minutes before the end of the game, the Suburbs found themselves alone in front of the goals. Jonesy yelled for help but ended up on his own. The shot went to the right and Jonesy dived and tapped it out for a corner. The corner was taken but headed out by Carl for another. The Suburbs tried but couldn’t capitalise on their second corner leaving a total of three potential goals unconverted.
The whistle blew and the score remained 0:0, allowing a point for each team.
