Round 10: Langwarrin v North Geelong – 19 June, 2010
It was always going to be a tough match against one of the top teams of the league – North Geelong Warriors. The boys fought hard to deliver a victory and three points, the final score being 1:0.
Jonesy was back in goals after a short break with Danny, Caff, Carl and Junior playing across the back. Jo, Boris, Driver and Ray filled out the middle while Caleb and Matty, as always played up-front.
It was a frantic start to the match with Geelong coming out firing and the boys scrambling madly to defend. In the first minute, a through-ball made its way right up the front to a waiting North Geelong striker who took aim and placed a shot. Jonesy was on his toes though and ran out to deflect it.
In fact the first phase of the match was all about North Geelong and it seemed that they would break through on numerous occasions. They mounted three speedy successive attacks before Langwarrin could even get the ball up to their half. The defence was up for the challenge though and got the ball out of play each time.
Langwarrin’s first chance started with some precise defending by Danny. Having won the ball and simultaneously blocking a North pass, he looked up, found Caleb and sent it long. Caleb turned, passed North’s defence with ease and found himself one-on-one with the keeper. He took a shot but it was deflected.
A subsequent North Geelong cross found Cevinski on the left hand side of the goal. He managed to get his head to it and took everyone off guard. The ball trickled dangerously across the face of the goal, but went out for a goal-kick.
Ray showcased his speed when he received a short pass from Matty and sprinted up the left wing to bring the ball into Langwarrin’s half. He was taken down by two North defenders and won a free kick for his efforts. Taken by Jo it found the mark and caught the keeper unawares, but a North defender was waiting and cleared the ball off the line.
Jo was given a red card as a result of receiving two cumulative yellows, in the 31st minute bringing Langwarrin down to 10 men.
Driver lost the ball in the middle of the park minutes later. North pounced and attacked – quickly. They got the ball past the Langy defence and it was up to Jonesy to sprint out and block the ball. He managed to stop it with his body but it was still rolling out in the open. Caff ran back and took over, passing two North strikers to bring it to the centre of the pitch. Again Langwarrin lost possession but the next North Geelong attack lead to a shot that sailed over the goals.
Frenzied defending took place throughout the half to ensure North Geelong couldn’t get through. They were keen and attacked constantly but the boys stood their ground.
In amongst this frenzied defending were some Langy attacks. In fact, the style of play for Langwarrin was still very much aggressive despite them being one man down. Right before the end of the half Ray brought the ball up and passed to Boris in the centre. Boris had four defenders blocking his passage to the goals and so passed out to Caleb on the right who took a powerful shot on the full. It was inches wide.
At half time the score remained 0:0.
Caff won possession in the 49th minute and cleared it to the centre of the pitch where Boris took control. He sent a long through-ball to Caleb up-front. Caleb found himself one-on-one with the keeper yet again and this time he did not miss. He tapped it right past him into the goals for a 1:0 lead.
Shortly after it was Matty to Caleb, Caleb with a though-ball to Ray who had the pace but too strong a touch. The North keeper scooped up the ball before it could do any harm.
North won possession and attacked speedily next. They sprinted down the park towards Caff on his own in defence. He stayed calm, pounced on a loose ball and cleared it out for a corner. They managed to win another corner but Carl was brought down winning Langwarrin a free-kick.
It didn’t take North long to again situate themselves in an ominous position. A powerful shot on goal was heading straight for the top right hand corner but Jonesy sprung up and tapped it out at the last second denying them yet another golden opportunity.
Carl won the ball in the back soon after and sent it up to Caleb. Caleb dribbled up the line and took the ball past the whole row of North defenders to place a cross. It was heading out of play when Boris came out of nowhere and leapt through the air to get his head to the ball at the last second. It soared through the air but it continued over the goals and out for a goal-kick. Simon came on late in the second half and utilised his speed to take on two North defenders and take the ball up the line. A defender sent him sprawling and the ref wasted no time in awarding him a red card. In the 87th minute the two teams had an even number of players again.
North didn’t stop fighting – in fact they looked threatening right up until the end. Jonesy was called upon repeatedly to launch his body across the goal to stop shots coming from all directions.
When the whistle blew to signal the end of a gruelling match for both sides, Langwarrin deservedly walked off the pitch with the 3 points.
