Round 6: FC Clifton Hill v Langwarrin — 10 May, 2008
Langy this week travelled to Richmond to take on Clifton Hill in what was a pressure game for the team. They had lost the past 3 games in a row, the first time under coach Gus Macleod, and were sitting in the relegation zone so this was a must win game for the team. The task was made even more difficult with the suspension of Adam Poole and Karl Cochrane, as well as several injuries to key members of the 1st team. Into the team came Ben Caffrey and making his debut was Kevin McAlister from the reserves. Also on the bench was Libba coming back from a long term injury as well as 3 reserve players in Adam Ahmadzai, Luke Burgess, and Sean Skelly.
Langy got the 1st half under way and not only was there some additions to the squad there was also some positional changes, with a backline of Jones in goal Ben Caffrey sweeping and Chris Quinn with Ben Cullen marking. In midfield we had Kevin McAlister wide left and Shane Tagliaferro out wide right. In the middle of midfield we had Simon O'Donnell, Barry Tulloch and Jamie Herd. While upfront we had Caleb Nichols and Jamie O'Donaghue. Langy started off on a positive note and attacked Clifton Hill right from the start and the break through came after 12 minutes. Langy won a free kick just over the half way line, Cullen played a short pass to Jamie herd who sent in a beautiful cross, Jamie O'Donague made a great run and leap and managed to divert the ball pass the keeper and into the net. So 1-0 Langy and just what they needed to settle the nerves and give them all a huge shot of confidence.
Langy continued to dominate the 1st half with some great attacking runs from Simon O’Donnell, Barry Tulloch, Jamie Herd and the sweeper Ben Caffrey. The defence was coping well and up front both Jamie O'Donaghue and Caleb Nicholes were working very hard. So at half time it was 1-0 to Langy.
In to the second half and Langy picked up from where they had finished the first half by attacking Clifton Hill, and the pressure finally paid off 15 minutes in when Langy had a corner that was swung in by Jamie Heard, Chris Quinn who was making a run for the ball was pushed in the back by the Clifton hill and gave the ref no option but to award the penalty. A Clifton Hill defender complained to the ref received his second yellow and was sent off. Up stepped Caleb Nicholes and he slotted the ball into the back of the net. So 2-0 to Langy with Clifton Hill down to 10 men. Langy then made their first substitution taking of Kevin McAlister who made a great debut and brought on Libba making his long welcome return after injury.
Langy was full of confidence now and it showed with Barry Tulloch who went on a great run, took on a couple of defenders and from just outside the box had a great shot that went into the left had corner of the goals. Now its 3-0 to Langy and the lads are playing some really good football.
With 15 minutes to go the scoring was complete and it was that man Barry Tulloch who made another great run into the box the Clifton hill defender made a slide tackle and Barry went to the ground. The ref pointed to the spot and it seemed a bit harsh on Clifton Hill but that's the danger you run when you make a slide tackle in the box.
Caleb Nicholes took the penalty and he once again slotted it home. It was now 4-0 to Langy and to make matters worse for Clifton Hill a second player was sent off for arguing with the ref. So Clifton Hill down to 9 men and Langy then decided to bring on young Adam Ahmadzai for Simon O’Donnell and five minutes later they took off 2 goal hero Caleb Nicholes for Luke Burgess.
Unfortunately there was no more scoring but that didn’t matter as Langy was very happy to come away from home and get a brilliant 4-0 result especially with the suspension and injuries to key players. This win sets up Langy for a great game against Dandy Thunder who had a brilliant win over Keilor winning 7-0. There should be a bumper crowd so get in early and catch the young winning ressie team who are playing some great football at the moment.
