Round 5: Langwarrin v Bentleigh Greens — 3 May, 2008
Langy were playing Bentleigh who were just above them and Langy needed to get back on track after two losses in the past two weeks. Stuart Craig was overseas but back from overseas was Simon O'Donnell. On the bench was Ben Caffrey, Adam Ahmadzai, Matthew Hodgson and Luke Burgess.
Langy started very well attacking Bentleigh Greens right from the start, but they knew they were going to be up for a tough game when Barry Tulloch received a yellow two minutes into the game after beating three players in the middle of the park for diving. Adam Poole also received a yellow early on for a body check. Langy had a couple of good chances with a header from a corner which Simon O'Donnell put just wide of the post. Ben Cullen then had a chance after a corner was failed to be cleared feel nicely for him but the defender cleared the ball off the line. Three minutes later another shot from Adam Poole that was hit from 25 yards was well saved by the Bentleigh keeper.
Bentleigh came into the game in the last 10 minutes of the first half and had one shot cleared off the line from a corner by Shane Tagliaferro who was on the post. Chris Jones in goal was required to make a couple of comfortable saves after this but the Langy defence was holding the Bentleigh attack to only a few half chances. So that's how it finished, 0-0 at half time with both teams unable to make a break through.
Into the second half, Langy again started positive keeping the ball in the Bentleigh half however Langy's day was to turn after a tackle by Karl Cochrane saw him receive a straight red with Langy now reduced to ten men only five minutes into the second half. Langy continued to work hard and were still able to created a few chance but were unable to finish off some good moves. Bentleigh then attacked down the right hand side and after a tackle from Nicholes they received a free kick way inside Langy's half and the ball was swung over and a free header allowed the Bentleigh player to head home.
Langy fought back straight away and nearly scored when Caleb Nicholes struck a 40 yard free kick that just curled past the left hand post.
Gus made his first change bringing on Ben Caffrey for Jamie O'Donahue who had been working hard all day on the wing. Then disaster struck Langy again with the ref booking Adam Poole for a tackle from behind that saw him receive his second yellow card and he was sent off for the first time in his career. So now Langy were reduced to nine players and it was only shortly later that Bentleigh were able to capitalise on having extra players to find space down the wing and send a cross over to an unmarked Bentleigh player who slotted the ball home from ten yards.
Langy continued to attack looking to get back into the game and Caleb Nicholes was through on goal after playing the ball past the defence but was brought down and Langy received a free kick 35 yards out. Ben Caffrey was working hard up front twisting and turning when he chased a through ball only to have his shirt pulled but unfortunately no free kick was rewarded.
So that's how it finished d 2-0 to Bentleigh. Langy now have a massive game this week away to Clifton hill and will be with out key players. The rest of the players playing will needed to dig deep to get anything out of this game as we call on they young reserve players, who are having a great season, to help out.
