Round 17: Langwarrin v Clifton Hill FC — 26 July, 2008
Back at Langy this week for the return leg against Clifton Hill. The first time around Langy were far too classy for their opponents, running out 4-0 winners, but there have been a few changes to both sides since that day.
To the line-up’s. Jonesy in goals. Defence: Bres, Cullen and the special one, Caff. Midfield: Shane, Boris, Cam, Pooley and Tommy, which left Karl and Caleb up front. The bench looked like Tommy, Scud and Adam and Scotty Powell.
So the stage was set, and off we went. It was pleasing to see Langy making all the early running, coming close a few times in the opening minutes. The Clifton Hill defence was having trouble containing the height of Karl and Caleb from the start, so it was no surprise how the first goal was scored.
Some good build up play in the middle of the park resulted in Cam swinging a cross onto the head of Caleb, the big hit man having little to do but direct his header into the back of the net. 1-0 to Langy and more of the same please boys.
They delivered. A long ball from Jonesy was misjudged by the Clifton Hill Defence, sending Karl through one on one. Instead of picking left or right, he decided to go over the top, lobbing the keeper beautifully. 2-0 and things were looking good.
Soon after they were looking great. Caleb, who was having a blinder, hounds the away sweeper until he coughs up the ball, the big man taking it past 2 defenders and hitting a low and hard drive that the keeper deflects away, but only to the feet of Karl who puts away his second of the match. 3-0 to the boys after the first 45 and the crowd was loving it.
The message from Gus at half time? Not sure, I wasn’t in the rooms but it probably would have gone something along the lines of "keep up the good work boys".
The faithful echoed these sentiments as the boys ran down the race for the second half, a huge cheer willing the team on.
Unfortunately the boys were still in the change rooms when the second half started, some slack defending gifting The Hill one back. A run to the by-line wasn’t stopped, the ball cut back and finished from 6 yards. Wake up Caff!
But there was no need to worry as not long after the 3 goal cushion was restored. A through ball from Tommy sent Karl clear. He cut across his man and was brought down, this ref rightly pointing to the spot. Caleb stepped up and calmly finished to make it 4-1.
It was turning out to be a great afternoon at Lawton Park with Langy running riot. The few times Clifton Hill went forward they were immediately stopped, one such occasion leading to the next goal. Boris won it and sent Karl one on one again, this time slotting it past the keeper for 5-1. Excellent work lads.
But Caleb wasn’t willing to let Karl hog all the glory of a hat-trick, latching on to a Shane Tagliaferro cross and finishing from close range. So 3 each to the boys up front, a very productive day out. But it’s the whole side that deserves the applauds, the seasons hard work finally starting to come to fruition.
So it finished 6-2 with the away side grabbing another consolation. A great performance by the lads, one to remember. Here’s hoping we can continue with it next week against Dandy Thunder.
