Round 5: Langwarrin v Bentleigh Greens — 3 May, 2008

After making the long trip to Sunshine the previous week, Langy were back on home soil and were playing their first game on the newly surfaced main pitch at Lawton Park. There opponents were Bentleigh Greens, who surprisingly parted with there coach midweek after losing there first match last week.

Captain Kevin McAllister came back in to the side replacing Adam Admadzai, who was called up to the senior line up and Daniel Biondo was drafted into the starting eleven up front after his wonderful goal against Sunshine.

Langy started off slow and were dominated by a very skilful and quick Bentleigh side in the first 15 minutes. Bentleigh were quickly penetrating the Langy defence and had a number of good chances to open the scoring, however some poor finishing and strong defensive work allowed the score to stay at 0-0. It was Langy who, against the run of play, opened the scoring on the 20th minute mark when a lovely free kick in to the box by Hayden Shippers was flicked on by Kevin McAllister and it was big Libba who got in front of the keeper and headed the ball into the roof of the net from 6 yards out, 1-0 to Langy.

Langy made it to half time with its lead intact, although Bentleigh had continued to pile on the pressure.

Langy started off stronger in the second half and began to create chances, it was Peter Ferguson who got the second goal for Langy when the ball was played into the far post where Peter was unmarked and he headed in to the top right hand corner of the net for a sensational goal that put Langy 2-0 up.

Langy started to dominate from this point, and even injuries sustained by Brenton Smith and Lirim Rasimi did nothing to slow down the boys. These two were replaced by Liam George and Alex Mackie and after 65 minutes the game was killed off as a contest when a wonderfully weighted pass from Anthony Famularo put Ferguson in on goal with only the keeper to beat. Ferguson duly slotted the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-0.

Bentleigh got a goal back with 10 minutes remaining after a free kick on the end of the box was beautifully placed over the wall and past the outstretched arm of Skelly in the Langy goal to bring the score to 3-1, but they were unable to close the gap as the Langy boys lifted again to cap off a good performance against a strong Bentleigh side.
