Round 1: Langwarrin v Southers Stars — 5 April, 2008
In the early game the under 21's played Southern Stars on the top pitch with the main pitch being out of action for another two weeks. Langy headed down the ground in the first half, and whilst putting Southern Stars under enormous pressure, were unable to take their chances. Langy wasted numerous chances during the half, with Caffrey putting the ball wide when he found himself one-one-one with the keeper after a long clearance from Skelly, McAllister shooting over from close range, Burgess 30 yard strike hitting the post, Caffrey having a header cleared of the line, the keeper making saves from Famularo and Ferguson and the defence somehow clearing the corners that caused their keeper major problems. In all Langy hit the woodwork three times in the first half and spurned other good chances.
But as often is the case, with 42 minutes on the clock a long ball over the top found a Southern Stars player one on one with Skelly and although Skelly got a hand to the shot it spun into the net. As unjust as it was Langy went into the break 1-0 down.
The second half started like the first, and with 54 minutes gone a Southern Stars striker received his second caution and was sent-off. Langy continued to pressure, and due to the good work of the Langy defence, the midfield was able to continue to push forward and support the strikers looking for the equaliser. Biondo replaced Shippers after 60 minutes and was immediately into the play, just missing the target at the back post after a great cross from Famularo.
With the midfield in top form, chances were again made but the boys were unable to finish them, with Caffrey again hitting the wall from an indirect free kick. George replaced Ferguson up front with 20 minutes remaining, and with time running out Caffrey finally hit the equaliser after 75 minutes, turning in the box and driving the ball home after a great ball from McAllister.
Although Langy continued to pile pressure onto the Southern Stars defence, they were unable to break through for the winner. In a last roll of the dice Langy introduced Illine for Burgess in an attempt to break the deadlock but the winner was not forthcoming.
