Round 22: Port Melbourne v Langwarrin — 8 September, 2007

Langy traveled off to already relegate Port Melbourne for the last game of the season and with the gaffer Gus Macleod back in charge after fighting the fires over in Greece the team was determined to end its losing sequence and finish off the season with a win. There were also a couple of milestones on the day with Gus coaching his 200th game in charge of Langy 1st Team and Chris Quinn playing his 150th game for the Langy 1st team.

Into the first team came Matt Hakvoort for the suspended Dave Breslin.

The team consisted of:
Defence: Jones, MacNicol, McClenaghan, Quinn
Midfield: Tagliaferro, Poole, Ahmadzai, Tulloch, Nicholes
Strikers: Paton, Cochrane
Bench: Caffrey, Harkvoort, Craig, Hehir, Skelly

Langy started off the match in fine form and attacked Port right from the first whistle; the lads looked to be in a determined mood to make sure the losing streak ended at Anderson Reserve. Tulloch was providing some great service down the left hand side and was delivering some quality balls into the box. It was from one of these crosses that Langy opened the scoring after 13 min's when he swung in a delightful cross, Big Caleb controlled it superbly and turned his body and belted into the back of the net, 1-0 to Langy.

Langy were then dealt a blow in the first half when Brian MacNicol had to be subbed for Matt Hakvoort due to injury. This seemed to unsettle the team a little as Darren went back as sweeper and Matt moved into the marking roll. But it did not last long and Langy began to get on top again with Thomas and Poole dominating in midfield and Barry still causing havoc down the left hand side for Langy. Unfortunately Langy couldn't convert any more chances and that’s how it stayed at half time, 1-0 to Langy.

Langy had to make another change at half time when Adam Poole who took a knock just before the end of the first half was not able to continue and on came Stuart Craig and he slotted into the middle of the park with Thomas. Langy were looking for that killer 2nd goal and it finally came 7 minutes into the second half when a huge clearance was flicked on by Stuart Craig and as the ball bounced in the penalty box. Timmy Paton challenged the keeper for the ball, winning the challenge he managed to bang the ball it into the empty net from 6 yards out, 2-0 to Langy.

Langy now were buzzing and it seemed they were hungry for more and up stepped Barry Tulloch. For his first he was out on the left hand side waltzed round a couple of defenders before slotting it past the advancing keeper, 3-0 to Langy. For his second, you’ll have to keep reading!

After this goal Langy seemed to slacken off slightly and Port looked to get a consolation goal and this they did from a quick counter attack. A beautifully flighted ball was swung in and an unmarked Port player was able to head it into the goal, 3-1 to Langy now. This fired up Langy once more and it was that man Tulloch who scored the his second and the team’s 4th and last goal. He won the ball on the right hand side beat 2 or 3 players went round the keeper twice and knocked it into the empty net to make the final score 4-1.

That’s how it finished 4-1 to Langy. They managed to finish off the season in style and 4-1 winners. With that result Langy finished 5th in the league this season and have done very well winning more games but finishing two places lower.

Congratulations to the Pines and Strikers for winning their respective leagues.

A big THANK YOU to the Langy faithful who once again out numbered the opposition supporters as they have done for the majority of games this season, hopefully you had an enjoyable season as well.

There are two important dates for the Langy senior players and supporters: the 1st being the Players Player night on Friday 21st September starting at 7.00pm and also the Presentation night which is on Saturday 6th October hopefully all players and supporters can make both occasions.
