Round 21: Langwarrin v Brunswick City — 1 September, 2007

Langy welcomed Brunswick to Lawton Park for the last home game of the season. The game was a big one for Brunswick who was still trying to get out of the relegation zone with 4 teams going down this year. Langy had the same squad as the week before with the only line up change being Stuart Craig benched for Thomas. Both teams were welcomed on to the park by a honour guard on Langwarrin juniors who had turned up to celebrate the last home game.

The game was fast paced going from end to end early with both Barry and Dave Breslin having early chances only for the defender to intervene on each occasion. Langy had the ascendancy in the early part of the game however the last ball was always cut out by the Brunswick defence. Shane Tagliaferro saw lots of the ball out on the right but Langy were unable to make anything from his crosses. After about 15 min's both side had failed to test either keeper with most of the play in the midfield. Then a free kick for Brunswick was played into the box and the forward was able to get a header in as Jones went to punch but his effort went over the crossbar.

Shortly after Caleb found himself free 30 yards out and his shot too went just over the bar. Some neat play by Thomas and Caleb won us a corner but as the resulting cross came over the ref blew for a foul by Caleb as he went up for a header. Barry then picked up the ball in the middle and played Breslin into the box for Langy's best chance of the half but his shot hit the side netting. Brunswick then found themselves in the same position but a tackle by Breslin put the shot wide for a corner. The resulting corner was cleared to the edge of the box where a great shot went just over the bar.

A long ball into the Brunswick box was met by Caleb and he took one touch and just as he went to hit it the keeper dived on the ball. Brunswick were then nearly gifted a goal when a shot at the near post looked easily covered by Jones only for the famed Langy bounce to cause the ball to bounce alarmingly as Jones dived and hit him in the face before deflecting just wide of the opposite post. Great save Jonesy!

The first half then ended. In summary it was a scrappy affair with no clear chance or shots on goals by either team.

The second half commenced in the same vein. The game was again contested in the middle of the park and neither team was able to test the keeper with a shot. After about 10 min's the game started to open up with both teams playing end to end football however still not really testing the keepers. Barry was able to drift wide of his marker only for his well hit shot drift just wide. Barry then won a free kick 35 yards out and Caleb and Thomas took the free kick as Caleb played Thomas wide of the box and his cross was well met by Cochrane but his effort went just wide.

A great move from wide, Cochrane and Admadzai saw some neat one – two football but the Brunswick sweeper just managed to clear as Admadzai looked to shot. Brunswick was now getting back into the game but similar to Langwarrin their last ball would let them down, allowing Langy to attack on the break. McClenaghan, MacNicol, Quinn and Jones were holding the Brunswick attack well with Poole, Admadzai, Breslin and Tagliaferro working hard in the midfield to create something for Cochrane and Tulloch.

However Langy were still unable to create a decent chance as the scrappy affair continued. Langy now made there first change with Timmy Paton coming on for Tagliaferro out on the right. Brunswick played a quick ball forward and their striker’s effort ricocheted off McClengahan’s leg and fell for him nicely in the box, however his follow up shot was put over the bar.

Cochrane then found himself wide right after a ball through from Caleb, his cross found Breslin at the far post where he cut back and had a shot across the goal only to see a defender clear it just over the bar. Langy then made a further change with Caffrey coming on for Breslin who had worked tireless on the wing. Paton then went wide right as Caffrey was pushed up front and Cochrane dropped into the middle. The game was now wide open with both teams finding space at each only yet still not able to find the decisive goal to separate the teams.

Caffrey picked the ball up on the half way line and ran at the defenders but his ball through to McClengahan was cut out in the box as McClengahan went to shoot. Langy were now creating the better chances but on the break it was Brunswick who got the killer goal as a free man wide was able to cross into the box where he found a striker with room to tap in from 5 yards.

Sammy Hehir then came on for Poole in a last chance to change things for Langy. Langy's last chance came as Caffrey won the ball from the sweeper wide and cut in the box and found Tulloch 5 yards out but his shot was some how saved. This is how the game ended 1–0 to Brunswick.

So Langy defeated for the forth time in a row, something that’s never happened in over 10 years. Langy head to Port Melbourne this week looking to end the season on a high after recent weeks in what has still be a great season for the Langy boys. We hope to have a great away support once again and don’t forget the end of season function back at the clubrooms starting at 6pm.

This is also a chance to celebrate Gus Macleod's 200th game as coach of Langwarrin soccer club!
