Brunswick City 0 0 Langwarrin

Round 10: Brunswick City v Langwarrin — 16 June, 2007

Langy travelled to Brunswick city after the hectic but successful weekend before. With a draw on Saturday against Southern Stars and a great 3-1 win on the Monday against Dandy Thunder. Brunswick had a great weekend as well winning 2-0 on the Saturday against Port Melbourne and then backing that up with a draw on the Monday with the high flying Bentleigh Greens.

So everything was set for a great match the only thing that could stop this was the small bumpy ground that the lads had to play on as it wasn't conclusive to free flowing passing football.

Out of the team went Sam Harir who had to go back overseas on family business and will be back in a couple of weeks. He was replaced in the starting line up by Timmy Paton who slotted into the midfield role just behind the two strikers of Ali and Big Karl Cochrane. On the bench Langy had Steve Vernon, Niall Mitten and Liam Swaine making it into the first team squad for the first time this season after some great displays in the reserves scoring some top goals.

The game started off with great pace and Tim Paton was getting stuck right in, in his new role in midfield and he was booked after 5 minutes for a deliberate hand ball. It took a while for both teams to adjust to the bumpy conditions as they looked for that opening. Langy finally got a chance after a great ball by Thomas Ahmadzai to Shane Taglieferro who took a touch but smacked the ball wide. It was not all one way traffic but Brunswick could not create any real chances to beat the Langy Custodian Chris Jones. In the last 10 minutes Langy did mange to create another chance from unlikely source in Matty Hakvoort who had gone up for a corner, as it was not cleared properly the ball feel for Matty who blasted the ball first time, unfortunately for Langy he blasted it too well and it went over the bar.

Just before half time Brunswick had the best chance of the 1st half to score when from a corner Jones came out to clear but was impeded by a Brunswick player, the ref allowed the play to continue as it feel to the feet of a Brunswick player inside the 6 yard box but luckily for Langy he could only knock it over the bar. So that's how it finished in the first half 0-0.

Into the second half and MacLeod must have been happy with the way his players were playing as there were no changes yet. Cochrane up front was working very hard and causing Brunswick a lot of problems with managing to get his head on the long throws from Matty that he was able to get well into the penalty box on the small ground. Thomas was having another great game to continue his brilliant season so far working very hard from box to box.

Brunswick did have the 2 best chances in the second half with the first nearly breaking the cross bar as the Brunswick Midfielder made a great run and took one touch hit a cracker of a shot from outside the box but luckily for Langy it hit the cross bar and they managed to scramble it away to safety. The other chance was a free kick just outside the box that was curled over the wall but struck the post before being belted clear. The Langy Custodian was beaten on both occasions but was heard to say “Had them covered”.

Langy thought they had a great chance when Ali chased a huge kick from Jones and as Ali and the Brunswick Goalkeeper collided (to be fair to Ali he did try to pull out), the ball feel to Timmy Paton's feet who was about to pull the trigger and put the ball into the empty net when the ref blew for a free kick on the goalkeeper. Ali was then replaced by Steve Vernon, who when came on made some great runs and worked very hard. Adam Poole was soon replaced not long after by Liam Swain, Adam had put in a good shift which was a great effort considering he had been in his sick bed with the flu all week.

The last substitution came with 15mins to go when Ben Caffrey was replaced by Niall Mitten. Langy managed to make one last effort on goal when they had corner and it was beautifully met by Chris Quinn header and it looked goal ward bound all the way, unfortunately as it bounced and beat the keeper the spin on it took it just wide of the post.

So that how it stay 0-0, with Langy now unbeaten in the last 4 games and getting some great results in this very tight league.

Langy now play Port Melbourne at home this Saturday in a game that they must win. Even though Port may be struggling in this league you cannot take them or any of the teams in this league lightly as anyone can beat anyone on there day. It is also a great opportunity to move up the ladder with all the top half of the teams playing each other.
