Round 9: Langwarrin v Southern Stars — 8 June, 2007

Langy played Southern Stars on Saturday, in which was going to be a start of a very busy weekend for the team as they would have to back up and play Dandy Thunder on Monday, so it was vital to get the long weekend of to a good start and with both teams sitting 7th (Langy) and 8th (Stars). There were a couple of changes from the St Albans game with Paton out injured and Stevie Vernon dropped to the bench. In Came Ben Caffrey who played up front and Chris Quinn who played in the more unfamiliar role for him in the centre of midfield in a man marking role.

Game started at a great pace with both teams having a real crack at each other, and the best chance of the game came when Sam swung in a great ball from a free kick 15 yards outside the penalty box on grandstand side end. Chris Quinn rose like a Gazelle and headed it towards goal, the stars keeper dived to his left hand side and managed too get a couple of fingers to it, this was enough to divert it on to the left hand post and come off and bounce along the goal line before a Southern Stars defender was able to hump it away from danger. It was a brilliant header and only an even more brilliant save was able to keep the score line locked at 0-0.

It was not all one way traffic in the first half, but what chance Southern Stars did have the defence of Hakvoort, Cochrane and MacNicol was holding firm and anything that did get pass was quickly cleaned up and held firmly by that Langy Custodian Chris Jones. Langy did have a bit of disruption to there set up with Dave Breslin coming off at the half hour mark with an injured groin and Ali coming on and moving up front to partner Ben Caffrey. But that’s how it stayed at half time 0-0 in a very entertaining game.

Second half and Langy made no further changes at the break and it was just as tight and fiercely fought game as in the first half with Poole, Thomas and Quinn working hard in the middle of the park. Langy managed to create a great opportunity to score when Poole played a great ball to Caffrey who laid it off to Shane Tagliaferro who looked like he only had to get it on target to score but unfortunately he blasted it wide.

New signing Sam Herir also had a great chance from a free kick outside the box, as Caffrey was wrestled to the ground just outside the box. The resulting free kick was well taken by Sam and beat the keeper but unfortunately it also beat the goal just sailing over the bar.

It was not all one way traffic with Southern Stars having a few good chances as well and the best chance coming after some great work down the left hand side, the resulting cross fell to a Stars player who failed to control it properly and it bounced to Macnicol who was then fouled just as the Stars player bundled it over the line, Billy Wright (Stars coach) and bench thought they had scored but the referee blew his whistle before the ball had even crossed the line. Caffrey was replaced with Vernon with 20 minutes to go, but he was unable to help break the deadlock.

So that’s how it stay with Langy's second nil all draw in a row, in a very entertaining game against a very skilful side. This sets it up for a great match on Monday with Dandy Thunder who had a great 2-1 win at North Geelong and will be looking to take maximum points in the local derby.
