Round 18: Coburg United v Langwarrin — 11 August, 2007

Langwarrin travelled to Knights Stadium to take on league leaders Coburg United and after going down 6-1 to Coburg earlier in the season, the boys were determined to take all 3 points and close the gap at the top of the table. Langy had a very strong side yet again, with Matt Hakvoort coming in to the side and joining up with Darren McCleneghan at the back.

The game started off at a frantic pace with both teams trying to get on top early, however it was Coburg who gained the upper hand in the first half with Langy struggling to keep up with the strength and height of Coburg. A challenge from the Coburg keeper saw Langy striker, Ali Memedovski, carried off the ground halfway through the first half, however he recovered well enough to continue playing. Coburg had a good chance to take the lead towards the end of the first half from the head of the Coburg striker, however it was well tipped on to the crossbar by Skelly in the Langy goals and the score stayed at 0-0 at half time.

Langy began the second half a lot better and started to play very attractive football and nearly took the lead when a header from a corner hit the crossbar and with the Coburg keeper on the ground the rebound fell to Ali Memedovski, however he put it wide from 8 yards out. Langy continued to put pressure on the Coburg defence and after 50 minutes took the lead when Steve Vernon was able to win the ball just inside the box and lob the ball over the Coburg keeper and in to the back of the net.

The goal really fired the boys up and 5 minutes later extended there lead when Kevin McAllister gathered the ball just inside Coburg’s half, beat 4 players and then fired the ball in to the bottom corner from the edge of the box to take the score to 2-0. Coburg began to push forward looking to get a goal back, however the Langy defence was up to the task and put there body on the line to keep Coburg at bay and the score stayed at 2-0 at full time.

It was a magnificent win by Langy to beat league leaders, Coburg United, and the win makes it a lot closer at the top of the table now, with Langy equal points with Coburg, however they have an extra game in hand. It is now up to the boys to continue there good form this week against St Albans, in what is destined to be another great game to watch.
