Round 16: North Geelong v Langwarrin — 28 July, 2007

After last weeks unfortunate defeat at the hands of Frankston Pines, Langwarrin made the long bus trip to Geelong to take on North Geelong at Elcho Park. Needing nothing less than a win to stay in contention with league leaders Coburg United, Langy were lucky enough to gain the experience of 6 first team players, including Club Captain Darren McClenaghan, who made his long awaited return after a serious injury.

Langy started off the better side and gained most of the possession inside the first ten minutes of the game, however it was North Geelong who took the lead after 15 minutes when the Langy defence allowed a North Geelong player time and space to shoot from the edge of the box and he blasted it into the top left hand corner, Skelly had no chance and North Geelong had a 1-0 lead.

Langy began to falter under immense pressure from North Geelong and things got worse after 25 minutes when Grant Colville was shown a red card for swearing at the referee. This left Langy to fight out the rest of the game with 10 men. The boys were unable to lift after losing a player and seemed to lack the intensity to find an equaliser and went in at half time 1–0 down.

Langy came out firing in the second half and lifted the intensity and within 3 minutes of the restart found the equaliser through Steve Vernon, who found time and space inside the box and was composed enough to bury the ball into the bottom corner of the net to take the score to 1–1. Even with 10 men, Langy continued to dominate the second half and started playing the football they are capable of and after 50 minutes found themselves in the lead when Anthony Famularo made a good run into the box and was able to find the back of the net from an acute angle.

North Geelong began to drop there heads and after 55 minutes Langy went 3–1 up when Liam Swaine was brought down inside the box by the North Geelong keeper. Liam stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to give Langy a comfortable 2 goal buffer with 15 minutes remaining. That is how the score finished up and it was a well deserved win by the Langy boys who put in a magnificent second half display after a very poor first half.

The win keeps Langy in contention with Coburg United, however the boys will be without playmaker Liam Swaine for the rest of the season as he has left to take up a scholarship in America. We wish Liam the best of luck with his scholarship.
