Round 12: Dandenong Thunder v Langwarrin — 30 June, 2007
Langwarrin failed to take there chances in front of goal and went down 1–0 to Dandenong Thunder in front of a large crowd at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday night.
After last weeks great performance to defeat Port Melbourne, Langwarrin were looking to continue where they left off and reverse the 4–3 defeat in there encounter against Dandenong Thunder two weeks earlier. Fraser Cameron had to play the role as stand–in striker to replace Nick Robinson, who was transferred midweek to Endevour Hills and Steve Vernon also came in to the lineup from the senior squad.
The game started off at a fast pace with both teams trying to get on top early. A number of chances on goal were created by both sides, with Steve Vernon and Fraser Cameron both having good chances to give langy the lead. It was Dandenong, however, that took the lead after 25 minutes when Langwarrin were unable to clear the ball from the back and the ball fell to a Thunder player who shot in to the bottom corner from just inside the box. Langwarrin stepped up a gear and should have equalised just before half time after a great run from Steve Vernon resulted in him being brought down just outside the box, however, the ball rolled through to Deni Skopljak who finished it with class past the oncoming keeper in to the bottom corner of the net. The ref, however, decided not to play advantage and blew for the foul on Steve and the resulting free kick went wide of the target. That’s how the half finished up, with Dandenong going in with a 1–0 lead.
Langwarrin came out stronger in the second half trying to find the equaliser they deserved and after 15 minutes gone in the second half they had that chance when Steve Vernon was brought down in the box by the Thunder keeper and the ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Kevin McAllister stepped up to take the kick, however it was saved down low by the Thunder keeper to keep the score at 1–0. Langwarrin continued to pressure the Thunder defence, however Thunder players were able to run down the clock leaving Langwarrin no time to create a goal and the score stayed at 1–0 at full time.
It was a disappointing result for Langwarrin, however, the boys are still in 2nd spot and have a good chance to close the gap on league leaders, Coburg United, in the next game against Westgate.
